Meet Dr. Kersten

Double board-certified in orthopedic surgery and orthopedic sports medicine, Andrew Kersten, MD, provides individualized care to athletes of all ages. He specializes in disorders of the shoulder, knee, and elbow, but cares for the full spectrum of orthopedic issues at his private practice in Asheville and Hendersonville, North Carolina.

Dr. Kersten enjoys working with his patients to formulate the best treatment plan to achieve their unique goals. He performs the most advanced procedures available, including minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery and computer-assisted shoulder and knee replacements. He also provides a full range of nonsurgical options, like platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections.

After completing his undergraduate education at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, Dr. Kersten earned his medical degree at the Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis. He went on to complete his residency in orthopedic surgery at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan, one of the top-ranked hospitals in the country.

Dr. Kersten then finished a one-year fellowship in arthroscopy and sports medicine at San Diego Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Center, where he trained under leaders in the field, including Dr. Jim Esch, the “father of shoulder arthroscopy.” During his fellowship training, Dr. Kersten worked with the San Diego Padres baseball team and San Diego State University football and soccer teams.  

In addition to treating patients, Dr. Kersten teaches courses and gives lectures on topics like shoulder arthroscopy and ACL surgery. He’s a reviewer for orthopedic scientific journals, including The American Journal of Sports Medicine, and joined Emerge Orthopedics in 2022.  Emerge Ortho has offices located in Asheville, Arden, Hendersonville, and Weaverville.  He has privileges at Pardee Hospital, Hendersonville, NC, and is the Department of Surgery Chairman.  He also has privileges at Advent Health, Hendersonville.

Dr. Kersten lives in the Asheville area with his wife, Casey, and their three children and two dogs. The Kersten family appreciates the friendly community, outdoor recreation opportunities, and abundance of great food in Asheville.

Dr. Kersten has completed extensive research in the areas of shoulder instability, shoulder implant design, throwing injuries in pitchers, and meniscal injuries.  He is currently a reviewer for two orthopedic scientific journals, American Journal of Sports Medicine​ as well as Arthroscopy.
